Sheila Afnan-Manns
Coordinator of the
AT&T /UCLA Initiative for 21st Century Literacies

Ms. Afnan-Manns has 10 years experience in the nonprofit sector, primarily working with schools and libraries in the areas of program design, management, and evaluation; grant writing and public relations; and budget development and analysis. Prior to UCLA, Ms. Afnan-Manns worked at the Catlin Gabel School in Portland, Oregon where she raised $5 million as part of their $17 million capital campaign, including a new Upper School state-of-the-art library. Before that she was at the New York Public Library's Office of Branch Libraries as assistant manager for budget and statistics. She also served as program director at the Washington Council on Economic Education where she managed the development of a high school personal finance program as well as developed and delivered K-12 teacher training workshops in economic literacy across Washington state.

Ms. Afnan-Manns is a member of the American Library Association. She has mentored high school students in programs sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club, the East Harlem Tutorial Program, and City in Schools. Ms. Afnan-Manns graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Washington and earned her Masters of Science in Public Policy/Nonprofit Management from the New School for Social Research. She is current earning her Masters of Library and Information Science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Stephanie Sterling Brasley, MLIS

Stephanie Sterling Brasley is a librarian and the instructional outreach coordinator at UCLA's College Library. As instructional outreach coordinator, Ms. Brasley has developed and conducted professional development workshops and institutes on information literacy and technology integration for K-12 teachers in Southern California. She is a past member of the American Library Association's Presidential Committee on Information Literacy Partnerships, an initiative which sought to educate the library and education communities about the benefits of forging partnerships with K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, private businesses and community organizations, to ensure an information literate and informed citizenry.

Ms. Brasley received her Bachelor's degree in Spanish Literature and her Master of Library Science degree from UCLA. Her primary areas of interest and research include information literacy instruction, effective ways to integrate technology in the K-12 classroom as well as higher education research sessions, and teaching methods that promote information literacy and technology integration.

Vivian Goldschmidt

Vivian Goldschmidt has 22 years experience in telecommunications, specializing in data networking, videoconferencing and Project Management, with the last seven years focusing on K-20, libraries, and community based organizations. Ms. Goldschmidt provides expertise in Project Management, aiding organizations in the process of coordinating formidable projects and providing individuals the foundation for project management proficiency. Ms. Goldschmidt received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Santa Barbara and earned her Masters of Business Administration from Pepperdine University. She also holds a Master Accreditation in Data Communications from the AT&T family of companies.

Judith Kantor, MLIS

Judith Kantor is currently the Library Media Teacher at Seeds University (UES) Elementary School, the laboratory school of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. During her 24 year tenure at UES, she has been actively engaged in promoting children's reading and information literacy skills. She has been a member of the board of the Children's Literature Council of Southern California since 1987 and served as President of the Council twice, most recently from January,1999 to December, 2000. Founded in 1961, the Council is a non-profit organization established to promote greater interest and encourage excellence in literature for children and young adults.

As the school librarian at Seeds UES, she has supervised many UCLA Information Studies interns. Ms. Kantor received her Bachelor of Arts and her Masters of Library Science from UCLA. More recently she earned her California Teaching Credential and Library Media Teacher Services Credential. In addition she has presented at local and national conferences on children's literature and information literacy. Ms. Kantor, with a team of teachers, has written Managing Information in the Digital Age, an information literacy curriculum that serves as the foundation for project-based learning.

Mary Schrader Lasica

Mary Schrader Lasica is an Education Advocate for AT&T California . She has been involved in training educators on the effective use of telecommunications technology for the past ten years. Mary received her Bachelor of Science degree in Design from the University of California, Davis and her Master of Arts degree in Communication Studies from California State University, Sacramento.

Sharon Sutton, Ed.D.

Dr. Sharon Sutton is currently the Coordinator of Technology and Outreach at Seeds University (UES) Elementary School, the laboratory school of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. During her tenure at UES, she has led the school to national prominence for its model use of technology. As Supervisor of Teacher Education in the Teacher Education Laboratory at UCLA, Dr. Sutton taught Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Psychology, and directed multiple subject candidates in their field experiences. Dr. Sutton received her Bachelor of Arts from UCLA and her masters and doctorate from Pepperdine University in educational technology. She also has a General Elementary Life Teaching Credential and a Language Development Specialist Certificate.

In addition to conducting extensive professional development on technology integration for school districts in the Los Angeles area, the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory, and Department of Defense Schools, she has also presented to California legislators, local and national conferences on this topic. Dr. Sutton has written and co-written numerous articles including Managing Information in the Digital Age, an information literacy curriculum that serves as the foundation for project-based learning.

21st Century Literacies Lesson Review Team

Steven Conley teaches English Language Development, grades 9-12, for Compton Unified School District. Steve participated in the Model Secondary Schools Project, whose goal is to create smaller schools in urban school districts which are more responsive to students' educational needs.

Phyllis Hayashibara teaches Advanced Placement U. S. History, Sheltered World History (to English Language Learners), and Humanitas U. S. History (an inter-disciplinary, thematic, writing-based approach) at Venice High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She also serves as the school's Humanitas Coordinator and Social Studies Department chair.

Ann Tolliver Sterling is a 2nd grade teacher of English Language Learners, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Ann is a lead teacher in the K-12 Alliance, a Bernstein Model Teacher and a member of the Technology Cadre in LAUSD's District J.

Pam Todd is the sole Library Media Teacher for a population of 3,000 students at Venice High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.. Pam is currently the President of the Los Angeles School Library Association.
